Ballet West's Nutcracker

I really almost just threw in the towel and gave up on my blog altogether, but I have had several requests to get it going again, and talking about Chloe's fun new adventure seemed like the perfect opportunity. So here it goes.

On September 10th, we headed to the Rose Wagner Theater in Salt Lake City for Ballet West's Nutcracker auditions. I was unaware the auditions were open to the public until a year ago, but once Chloe heard that they were open she was determined to audition this year. You are assigned a part to audition for according to height, so we knew she was auditioning to be a soldier. I also knew she was on the short end of the height scale, making her one of the youngest girls auditioning for the role. I told Chloe time and time again to remember that this would be a good opportunity and experience no matter what happened. But that didn't stop Chloe from making one of her birthday wishes, when she blew out her candles the night before, to get a part in the ballet (if you think I was feeling anxiety and pressure, you are right. but I also kept telling myself that this was just for the experience - logically thinking, this was Chloe's first year auditioning and she was one of the youngest. I didn't think her chances were good at getting a part, so no pressure)

We entered the theater filled with excited little ballerinas and anxious mothers. Chloe got her # and we pinned it on (#512 - her new favorite number). We did a few finishing touches on her bun and then she began to stretch as we waited for the morning audition group to finish. We watched as tear filled eyes came out after being cut. We watched crying mothers console their daughters. Finally it was time for the soldier auditions. Looking like the perfect little ballerina Chloe went into the audition leaving me and my mom there to wait. And wait. And wait.

After what seemed like forever (actually 3 hours), a woman came out and announced that in a few minutes a group of girls that had been cut would be coming out. She proceeded to tell us that there would be many sad and teary eyed girls that needed our love and support. Any feelings of calm that I had were gone at this point. My stomach was in knots as we waited for the doors to open. About 15 minutes later the doors opened and what seemed like a never ending stream of sad, teary eyed girls starting pouring out. I searched through the sea of girls, all dressed in black leotards with their hair in buns, for Chloe's face. I saw a couple of girls I knew (5 years older than Chloe) come out and my heart sank. I expected her face to be the next I saw. But then the doors closed, and no Chloe. But would there be more cuts... Over 130 girls had gone in to the audition. How many had come out in that first cut? I can honestly say that this was the most heart stopping experience I have had as a mother. And that is saying a lot considering we have been through bunches of dance things, sport tryouts and games, etc. So again we waited. And finally they came out and announced that the girls who has made soldier would be coming out shortly. Chloe was among the select girls who made it. We were all so excited.

Braxton, Justice, and Belle were so cute and excited for Chloe as well. They made her a big poster with special messages on it (I am sure Dave suggested the idea). It is was also fun that a couple of Chloe's cute friends made it as well. And a special thank you to my mom (aka. Grandma/Mrs. Peek) for going with us to the audition and being Chloe's dance teacher.

I am so proud of her and so thrilled for her. This is such a great opportunity and experience. Since, we have had many hours of rehearsal, costume fittings, cast photos, and lots and lots of driving to Capitol Theater. But I have to say, as I see Chloe come out with her smile beaming and her eyes sparkling, it is all worth it.

I sent out an email to family and friends, but I thought I would post it here as well - this is what I sent

"Chloe auditioned for Ballet West's Nutcracker and was selected to perform as a Blue Soldier. She has been working hard with lots of rehearsals and loving every minute of it. She was selected to be in Cast A which is the first to perform. It is a great cast because she gets to perform at Weber State University as well as Opening weekend at Capitol Theater. The downside to her Cast is that they also does all of the Ballet West Corporate Sponsor and Invited Guests performances, which means there are not as many performances open to the general public to buy tickets for. If you are interested in buying tickets to the Nutcracker and would like to see Chloe, they go on sale tomorrow, October 15th. The tickets for the Weber State performances (Friday, Nov. 25th - evening and Saturday, Nov. 26th - matinee and evening) need to be purchased through Ogden Symphony. The tickets for the performances at Capitol Theater Friday, Nov. 25th - evening and Saturday, Nov. 26th - matinee and evening)can be purchased at Capitol Theater or go to Balletwest.org and follow the links. She gets to perform 8 other times at Capitol Theater, but the tickets are not for sale to the general public."

Gingerbread Houses

Somehow I missed out on some of the fun things I love to do before Christmas. It just seems we were super busy for some reason. Anyway – when I was asked what I wanted to do for my birthday I decided that I would take advantage. As per my request, we decorated Graham Cracker Houses. Everyone were really good sport, considering many had already done this earlier in the season. We had lots of fun and made some pretty cute houses.

It is always fun to see the kids personalities come out in their houses.

Braxton = simple (let me finish so I can watch bball on TV)

Justice = creative and unique

Chloe = candy, candy and more candy

Belle = a little of this and a little of that (supervised by me)

SNOW Much Fun

With the fresh new snow and the kids out of school on Christmas break we just couldn’t miss the opportunity to go sledding. What a fun family activity.

My little sister and her family were here, so they went with us as well as my parents. It was a perfect day for sledding.

Braxton and Justice continually raced down the hill trying to decide which sled was the fastest.

Chloe loved racing with the boys and also loved playing with the little girls.

Belle took a while to warm up to the whole idea of sledding, but after a few times down with Crystal and Grandma she got brace and wanted to go all by herself. She also loved playing in the snow with Harlie.

Cute little Schaeffer (my nephew) seemed to love the whole adventure. Either that or he was so cold he could not move. He sure looked cute. And Harlie (my niece) loved sledding.

Dave tried snowboarding down as well as riding in the tube and giving everyone a good push start at the top of the hill.

I even got in on the action (often times I miss out because I want to get that perfect picture).

Everyone had a GREAT time. And even though I did get in on the fun, I also took a couple hundred pictures, so I thought I would share those in a slide show.

Twas The Night Before Christmas

We spent Christmas Eve at my parents house this year. It began with the Peek Pizza party (which for some reason I have no pictures of). It is really quite a simple party, but lots of fun. Games, family, food and no pressure.

After the extended family left the kids opened there ‘12th day of Christmas’ present from Grandma & Grandpa.

And as always – it was the traditional ‘New Christmas Pajamas’. The kids always know what is in the that gift, but they are always SO excited for the new PJ’s. I love that.

Grandma got a new pair of pajamas too.

Then we all settled in the living room to listen to our Nativity Story tape. It is just a simple 10 minute tape of the Nativity, told by Burl Ives, but I love it. Probably because we listened to it every Christmas Eve when I was a little girl.

Finally we headed home to prepare for Santa. The kids sprinkled reindeer food outside (they really love this tradition – their faces don’t show it thought because it was SOOO cold),

and fixed a tray of cookies and hot cocoa supplies for Santa.

BOARDING NOW : Polar Express

We started a new tradition last year, The Polar Express Party. I love this just because it is so simple, yet so much fun. The morning of the party each of the kids receive a ticket to board the Polar Express.

We go to my parents in our pajamas, have doughnuts and hot chocolate, and then get all snuggled in blanket and pillows for the movie (the Polar Express on my parent’s surround sound is amazing).

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Have you ever read this book? It is one of my very favorite Christmas stories. Justice’s class put this on as a play at school this year and he had one of the main parts.

I don’t have a picture of the actual performance because I didn’t realize. Basically, one morning before school Justice says to me, “Mom, my class is doing some play thing at school today, so if you want to come by you can.” I really wondered if it was a big deal or not, but I decided to go and check out the ‘play thing’. I got there and found that the kids had been practicing and making scenery and props for a week and Justice had one of the main roles. I WAS SO GLAD I WENT. ( I was also, so sad I didn’t have any cameras with me) Justice did a great job. I loved every minute of the the play and his performance. He is such a great kids and I love him so much. GREAT JOB JUSTICE!!!

**Note to Self – Next time Justice says his class has some ________ thing, take the camera and get their early for a front row seat.**

Baskets of Fun – Chloe’s Basketball 2009

Chloe has played Jr. Jazz basketball before, but this year was extra FUN because she got to play ALL GIRL, and she was on a team with a bunch of her friends.

Chloe scored her first point ever this season. She loved basketball and wanted to practice with her big brothers and Dad as much as she could.

Watching little girls play ball is always a different story than boys, but these girls were so cute and really good. They won every game until the semi finals when they lost to another team from our town (the other team was made up of all 4th graders and one 3rd grader, and our team was all 3rd graders except two).

Her good friend’s Dad was the coach. He held practice every week through the season, and was great with the girls. Thanks a ton Coach Fisher.

Chloe is already looking forward to next season.

Peek Christmas Party

It is a tradition that has been going since I was a little girl for the Peek cousins to draw names for Christmas. It is really fun that we still do it now with the Peeks cousins kids. I love this because this party gives my kids the opportunity for a Christmas party with lots of kids around their age. It is an added bonus that they all go to school together and are friends.

As always it was a fun party. Good family, good good, good friends, good fun.

Happy Turkey Day

This year we got to have Thanksgiving with my family at my Aunt and Uncle’s house. The food was delicious and it is always nice to get together with family and remember all the things we have to be thankful for.

Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of everyday life I forget to stop and look around to see all of my blessings. I am truly blessed and I am thankful for all of them. And I am especially grateful for this season that help me to stop and think about all that I am grateful for.

I went through and asked each of the kids and Dave what they were thankful for this year and this is what I got.

DAVE: freedom and family

BRAXTON: basketball, and the ability to play basketball

JUSTICE: friends and family to play with

CHLOE: family and all the beauty Heavenly Father has given

BELLE: my family, everyone in my family

After dinner we spent the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying one another at my parents house.

Wrestling for Justice

This fall Justice tried something new. Wrestling. Wrestling was new to all of us at our house. I think I had more knowledge than anyone, and my only knowledge cam from cheering at wrestling meets in high school, but we were all very excited for Justice and his new challenge.

The program was run through the local high school. The kids got to go twice a week where the high school wrestlers taught them moves. Then on the weekends there were wrestling tournaments. Most of the kids Justice’s age and in his weight division had wrestled before, so he was at a slight disadvantage, but he did great. He wrestled in three different meets and then at the BIG regional.

He placed 4th at the Regional Meet after getting head butted and having a pretty severe bloody nose.

As you can see from the pictures he wasn’t very happy about his 4th place finish, but I have never been more proud of him. He never quit and he did his best.

On our way out from the meet, a stranger saw our upset Justice and took him aside and gave him a pep talk and told him how proud he should be of himself just for coming out. That nice stranger made all the difference for Justice that night. I know I will never see him again or be able to thank him, but I just want to write down, so I can remember that wonderful act of kindness. You can see the difference he made by the look of Justice’s face when we went home.

Baking Memories

I think all kids go through the phaze when the LOVE baking cookies. Belle loves to help in the kitchen right now. It doesn’t matter if it is breakfast lunch or dinner, she just loves to help. Her absolute favorite though is ‘baking cookies’.

It is extra fun when you get to make cookies with Grandma.

The Perfect End to the Season - Football 2009

Well it is official our Braxton's teams footballs season has ended. We were a little sad that we didn't make the play-offs, but since basketball has already begun, and we have been doing double duty, it was okay.

I really wondered when the season started how Braxton would like football. He is very athletic, but very calm and mild. He is usually ALL BASKETBALL. I didn't think there was a mean aggressive bone in him, but I guess I was wrong. He learned a ton, was really aggressive and totally enjoyed football. In fact, he loved playing defense and tackling.

To finish off the season we had a really special experience. There was a young man on Brax's football team who has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism, and he scored the final touchdown of the season. I would go into detail about this, but I think I will let the professionals handle it.

They were on the front page of the standard examiner and featured on ksl radio. It is a great story and I am so glad Brax got to be a part of it.

Chloe 3rd grade field trip

I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the chaperones for Chloe’s third grade field trip. We had such a cute little group of girls.

I wondered about the weather because the smell of rain was definitely in the air, but no rain came until we were on the way home.

The zoo has lots of baby animals right now and we saw them all.

It was so much fun to spend the day with these cute girls. They are as sweet and as fun as can be.

A Kid With Class

A couple of weeks after the kids went back to school, it was Belle’s turn.

Every morning she would wake up and ask, “Is it preschool today? Do I get to see Teacher Sherrie?” It makes me a little sad to know that my baby is in her last year of preschool. I can’t believe she is really that old. Where did the time go?

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Every year at the end of the summer my mom lets each one of my kids have a special day with her. They get to have dinner of their choice with Grandma and Grandpa, watch a movie, play games, spend the night, and do some school shopping. All the kids look forward to this every year because it is their one on one time with my parents. We go to their house at least once a week, so that is nothing new, but the undivided attention is extra special.

The kids are spoiled ever year with fun new school clothes from Grandma. *Thanks a ton Mom*

A Day At The Zoo

With the kids back in school, and preschool not in session yet, that leaves lots of "Belle and Mommy" time. We have been having lots of fun playing play-dough, coloring pictures, even doing laundry and housework - isn't it fun when kids are young enough that folding the towels and dusting is a 'fun' thing - and on Thursday we even had a special outing to the zoo.

Belle has a cute little friend named Brady. The two of them became good friends last year when their big brother's played on a couple different basketball teams together, plus they are in the same primary class. They are smitten with each other and even informed us at one point of the wedding plans they were making. So when the two of them got to spend the day at the zoo together they were thrilled.

The weather was perfect and the zoo wasn't too crowded. Brady the Belle, the adventurers, as they called themselves guided us through the zoo with their maps.

They rode the carousel a couple of times and the train.

But the highlight at the zoo today was all the baby animals. I can't remember a time at the zoo when I have seen more babies or more active animals. Other than a few monkeys, all of the animals were up and walking around.

Some of our favorites were the baby giraffe, the tiger cubs, the monkeys, the snakes,and our favorite was the baby and mom snow leopard. We watched the cub jump and play with his mother and his ball.

It was a SuPeR fun day at the zoo. Thanks Sue Ann and Brady for a great day!!!!

Football Fever

As hard as it is for me to say good-bye to summer there are so many things I love about fall. I love school. I love seeing my kids learn, reading with them, and helping them with homework. I love the crisp cool air and changing leaves that symbolize the new season. And as much as I love the freedom of summer, there is something to be said for schedules, even really busy schedules.

My favorite part of fall though is FOOTBALL. Despite my love for the game, my boys have only played flag football (which has been fun), but this year Braxton is playing tackle football. I truly had forgotten a little how much I love this game.

After 3 weeks of practice the first game arrived. I have to admit I was a little nervous, but it was a good nervous. Braxton played great!! He was in on several tackles and made some nice blocks. I was so proud of him.

There was a kid on the other team who was HUGE. It took at least 3 kids to bring him down everytime he carried the ball.

After the draft to make two teams, Braxton and his friend River ended up on the opposite team from most of their friends. here are the two of them on the sideline

Football has been great so far, and I am sure there will be many more posts about it coming up

Fishing with Grandpa

Every year my mom takes the kids school shopping individually for a special day with Grandma. See here for details. This year Justice got the BoNuS!!

My Dad LOVES to fish. He ties his own flies and grins from ear to ear whenever you ask him about some fish story. Justice also LOVES the outdoors, and LOVES spending time with Grandpa, so when he found out that he got to spend the day fishing with Grandpa, he was more than EXCITED.

Justice and Grandpa spent the day up at the Deseret Land Reserve fishing and enjoying nature. For Justice, it was the PERFECT way to end the summer.

Hello Blog World ... I'm BACK

Well it is official, I have have totally slacked on the blogging. I could sit here and list all they reasons and excuses, but why. I have debated whether I should try to back track and catch up or just skip ahead to now, but I do have several posts ready (except for the pictures), and this is my blog and I blog for me. I want all the summer memories (with pictures) documented here. It is going to take me a few days, but I am going to cover it all. When I am done I will put a post with all the links to the back-posts I have done (if you are interested). I am going to put the posts in the order they belong.

Blogging is truly such a joy and outlet for me, and I NEED to make time for it.

Back To School

I have a bunch of stuff to blog about, but I wanted to take care of this while it was fresh on my mind.

It is 8:45 and my house seems empty. Belle is just eating her breakfast, but the other kids have left for school. The house seems so quiet after all the hustle and bustle of getting ready this morning. It is a somber quiet. I love having the kids around and it will definitely take me few days to adjust. I do love fall though, and I am excited for the adventures the new school year will bring.

Braxton is starting Jr. High this year. You can almost see the nervousness in his eyes. I can't believe he is really in Jr. High, but he certainly looks like he should be. He stands 5'5" now and we had to get all his school clothes in the men's department (I wasn't ready for that). His biggest concern was finding his classes. He has lots of good fun friends though, so I am sure once he finds his way around he will love Jr. High.

Justice is in 5th grade this year. He was excited for school. Really he was excited to see all his friends at school. His teacher this year is Mrs. Malloy, and he has quite a few of his good friends in his class. He was watching the clock, anxiously waiting to leave for the bus this morning. While he waited he reviewed his double digit times tables to make sure he was prepared to make a good impression and start the school year right. This is going to be a fun year for Justice. JUSTICE LOVES SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chloe is in 3rd grade. She has been counting the days until school starts. She loves everything about school. Sure she loves summer and all the fun, but she thrives on a busy schedule, challenges and lots to do. She spent hours deciding on the perfect first day outfit and hair do. She has a bunch of here really good friends in her class this year and she has Ms. Broadhead and Mrs. McGarry this year, who are fantastic, so I am looking forward to lots of fun.

Fall is fun exciting time of year. School, dance, football and more. When school starts it seems like the start of a new year to me. A lot more than in January when everything is already in motion. It always seems like a great time to set goals, organize things, and get some fresh starts. So here's to a great start to a NEW year of adventures, learning and fun.

Let’s Bowl

This summer Justice and his friend Taggart joined a bowling league. It was a ton of fun. They got to bowl three games every week. Justice even scored over 100 five different times. That is better than I bowl

Classic Waterslide

It doesn’t seem to matter how many time we go there, the kids love it. The three big kids just go, go, go from slide to slide. Their favorite is the Baracuda. It really takes me back in time because I used to go to the same classic waterslide and have the same favorite slide. Belle goes down the slides now (with someone), but she still just loves to play in the water play area. And of course, friends to run and play with make the day complete.

Such a fun simple way to spend a summer day.

Checkpoint Charley

Dave has played with many different bands throughout our marriage. One of the best (if not THE best, they are my favorite) is a band named Checkpoint Charley. To here some of their CD click here. They are a group of musicians that are not the norm. They are good successful family men. Anyway, Checkpoint Charley was invited to open for Jon Schmit at Wolf Mountain for the Summer Concert Series. Of course, we took the family and went up. We couldn’t miss such a great concert and the kids were way excited to see Daddy drum.

The weather was absolutely beautiful, and the concert was amazing. And as an added bonus Crystal and family was in town (even Jake – her husband had arrived) so they came as well as my parents. I think everyone had a fantastic time. Out enjoying nature, listening to amazing music, and sharing it all with family = the perfect night.

Stepping Back In Time – Dinosaur Park 2009

One of the places we went to while Crystal and her kids were visiting was the Eccles Dinosaur Park. We go here almost every year, and every year the kids love it.

The kids always love to dig for the dinosaur bones. The boys have kinda outgrown that, so they just chilled for a bit with grandpa.

My Little Beauty Queens

In August each year our little town has its Country Fair Days which is kicked off with the “Little Miss Pageant”.

The girls get to learn a little dance to perform, and they get to be escorted out by a cute young boy and wave to the audience as a few fun tidbits are red about them. Then the names are put in a hat and they draw out the winners (no judging involved). This year was extra fun because my little sister was here visiting and her little girl got to participate too.

Let’s Go To The Movies

Every summer we try to make to the drive inn at least once. This summer we made it a few times, but I think the most memorable was when we went with Crystal, Harlie, Schaeffer and Grandma. We saw Ice Age 3 – Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which we loved.

I know the quality of the movie isn’t as good as in a theater, but the fresh air, hot pizza, comfy blanket, and abundance of treats sure make up for that.

Tress Obsessed

Back in March I braided Chloe’s hair in micro braids. Even though it took a while, we LOVED it. With summer in full swing and LOTS of swimming I decided to go for it again, but on both girls. Fourteen hours later (spread over a few days) and 162 braids, the girls were both good to go. And looked as cute as can be.

I am sure we will be doing this again next summer (if not sooner) because even though it is time consuming, five minute hair-dos for eight weeks is priceless.

Kid Dates

This summer we came up with the idea of doing some kid dates. You know, Daddy - Daughter, Mommy – Son, Father – Son, Mother – Daughter . It was kind of a short lived idea because we only went one round, but it was fun.

First I took the boys to the Drive Inn to se Transformers 2 and Star Trek. We took the 3rd row out of the Expedition, got pizza and treats and had a really fun time. I was the only one who made it through both movies though.

While I took the boys, Dave had a special game night with Belle (Chloe was at a party).

The next week. I took the girls to see the Hannah Montana Movie. We invited Grandma to go with us.

And Dave took the boys to see Star Trek (since they both slept through it at the Drive Inn.

It really was a lot of fun.

Chloe at the Lake

My cute niece Miranda got baptized this summer and Chloe was lucky enough to be able to go. The rest of our family couldn’t make it, but Ma G. and Pa G. were kind enough to let Chloe go with the. It meant a lot to her because Miranda and Chloe are the same age. It all worked out to be a really fun little trip for her. My other niece Charlotte was also in town, so after the baptism Ma G. and Pa G. took the girls up to the cabin at Bear Lake. They played together in the strong winds, swam together in the Lake, ate together, basically just enjoyed one another.

Thanks so much Fritz & Kathy for giving Chloe and the girls such a good time.

Why Walk When You Can Dance

The girls had a WoNdErFuL dance recital. It is so much fun and such a unique experience for them to be able to take dance from my mom. I know I am biased, but there is no one better than 'Mrs. Peek'. My girls have learned so many things from Mrs. Peek, lots more than just dance.

This year Belle was in two dances. She performed 'Mickey Mouse's Birthday Party' and 'The Good Ship Lollipop'. If you know Belle at all you understand why I can't just say 'dance', I have to say 'performed'. She is my little superstar. She loves being in front of people and her personality shines through, AWAYS.

There is a part in this song that sings, "If you eat too much, ooo ooo, you'll awake with a tummy ache." Mrs. Peek told the girls they needed to be sad and worried during this part of the song, well Belle took that to heart, as you can see. In the hundreds of times we practiced, I can honestly say she performed it each and every time.

Chloe was able to dance in four dances this year. She did two tap and two ballet. She is really becoming a beautiful dancer.

In tap she did "An Annie Medley”

and “Super Fantastic Stars”.

Chloe’s tap class is amazing. They are just one of those classes that just make you say, “WOW”. The sounds are all synchronized which is really special for 2nd grade girls.

For Ballet Chloe danced “Cinderella” and “Thank Heaven For Pretty Girls”. She was a beautiful, graceful ballerina with every move.

I am so proud of both of the girls. They did a fantastic job. I personally know how hard they both worked and practiced.

Pinewood Derby

Of all the Cub Scout events, I have to say that I think the Pinewood Derby is one of the funnest. I couldn't go and watch Justice this time because the girls had dance rehearsal and Brax had basketball, but my heart was there and so were Dave & Justice.

Dave and Justice spent many hours building his car. Justice was a little disappointed that his car wasn't the fastest, but it sure looked cool. He modeled it after a leopard which is fitting for Justice because he loves animals and leopards are his FAVORITE.

Before the boys could rive their derby cars, they had to get a Pinewood Derby Racing license. How fun!! All the boys passed the test with flying colors.

Belle has officially graduated from her first year of preschool. She went to Teacher Sherrie this year and loved every minute of it.

I did the kids' graduation pictures, and I think they turned out really cute.

At graduation Teacher Sherrie read an interview with each of the kids. This is what Belle's said.

"I love to sing and dance everyday at preschool. I am a good friend. I never throw sand. I love to do science. I am an artist. I can spell my name, B E L L E. That spells Belle. I can write it too. I am an artist. I love to draw and read stories. I love preschool."

Belle made lots of fun new friends and can't wait for next fall.

REMEMBERING ... Memorial Day 2009

Every year for as long as I can remember we have celebrated Memorial Day by visiting the cemeteries and putting flowers on the graves. I had someone ask me the other day why we do this every year which really made me stop and think. It isn't the most exciting thing to do. Why
do we?? After some thought I came up with several answers.

First, it is tradition. When I was a little girl we always helped my Grandma Peek gather flowers and fix them in cans to put on the graves. She grew irises and lilacs special for the occasion, and we would go to a couple of friend's houses to get other flowers. Ethel Earl's for her beautiful snowball bushes and Martha Birt's for peonies. The flowers needed to be beautiful to show our respect and love for those who came before us. I learned something new every year as my grandma shared her stories at each grave site.

Second, it is a way to learn about our ancestors. If it were not for the people we honor on Memorial Day we would not be the people we are. That is especially true for me now that all of my grandparents have passed away. I didn't know my Grandpa Peek, but my other grandparents played very special roles in my life. Each one helping mold who I am today.

Next, it is a way to show gratitude for the men and women who serve our country and the many who have lost their lives doing so. It helps bring a little bit of reality to that sacrifice. Looking through the cemeteries with all the flags placed by the graves of those who have served our country is very humbling.

Finally, the most important reason for me, is the REMEMBERING.

Remembering the way my Grandma Peek earned the name of Grandma Cookie, Remembering the fun sleepovers I had at her house. Remembering her cup-o-soup and buttered toast (that was better than anyone else's). Remembering her teaching me how to crochet and quilt. The way she used her hair pins for books marks in the Ensign (which she read from cover to cover every month). The way she lived her life through example, never criticizing or judging, just accepting and understanding. Remembering the love I felt each time I walked through her door.

Remembering my Grandpa Wallace giving me tractor rides. Remembering his love for the grocery store. He could spend hours in the produce section. Remembering his overalls and his fancy dress hats. Remembering how he always reminded me of Fred Astaire.

Remembering his rough but gentle hands. Remembering my Grandma Wallace making clothes for all of my dolls. Remembering her sewing many of my dance costumes. Remembering the hours I spent at her house while my mom taught dance. Remembering the paper dolls she made me. The many games of Pollyana we played (is anyone else familiar with that game). Remembering and loving her handwriting which she hated (my grandma only went to school through the 8th grade, so she had trouble writing things). Remembering her home-made chicken noodle soup that she made for me each time I was sick and for each of my pregnancies. Remembering that I was always welcome.

At the cemetery this year my parents told us some fun facts about their parents. It was neat to see my Mom and Dad light up as they talked about the wonderful people that raised them, the wonderful people they called Mom and Dad. Some of the things we learned were;

According to my Dad

His mother's names was Fern, but she always went by Alberta because her best friend was named Fern. She walked over 2 miles to and from work every day for almost 6 years. She was tolf shw was an old maid because she didn't get married until she was 24 (back then that was considered an Old Maid).

His Dad was raised as an only child. He had two older sisters, but both died before he was 10. He was born and raised in red brick house here in South Weber. He was the first Eagle scout in South Weber and he served as the Scout Master in the South Weber ward before he was a member of the church. His Dad died from hardening of the liver due to drinking.

According to my Mom

Her mother loved to rollerskate around the streets of Ogden at all hours of the night. She lived in several different home as a child due to the death of her mother when she was very young. She taught herself to sew (and she was an amazing seamstress, who even created her own patterns). She taught herself how to play the piano by ear. She could never read music, but she was a beautiful pianist.

Her Dad was a farmer in every sense. He was born and raised in Clinton. He loved to ballroom dance. He loved candy, but one bag would last him a very long time (he had great willpower). He loved the grocery store. He loved shopping. He loved to take my mom and her sister to dance and he would stay and watch the lessons. He trained to fight in WW2, but never went due to a hernia. My grandmother and him were married on Christmas Eve in a courthouse with the janitor as their witness before he shipped out for basic training.

We finished up our Memorial Day with our annual cook-out.

I guess it is our family's special unofficial kick-off to summer. Nothing says summer quite like picnic tables, hotdogs and smores. It was a memorable day the I will REMEMBER

Mother's Day 2009

Mother's Day this year was a lot of fun and very special. I truly believe that my GREATEST blessing in this life is being a mother. I am so humbled each time I look at my beautiful children. To think that I have been entrusted with them, to raise them, to teach them, and to love them can actually be a little overwhelming. They each have such beautiful special spirits that are a joy to be around. As challenging as times can be, as tiring as days can be, as sleepless as nights can be and as messy as life can be, I would not give up being a mother for anything. I absolutely love receiving all the handmade gifts each year. I truly treasure them because I know they cute little hands that worked so hard. Thanks kids & Dave for the fun gifts and for loving me each and every day.

I have also been very blessed in my life with great women -mothers- to pattern life after and have as examples. A great mom, mother-in-law, and grandmothers who have played a huge role in my life and have shown me many times the true qualities a mother must possess. I hope each of them had a beautiful day and knows how much I appreciate, love and care for them.

As always, I try to come up with something creative and fun for a gift. I believe a gift should be from the heart, and for me that usually means creating something. This is what we came up with this year.

I am sure many of you saw my kid's valentines (they were holding blow-pops). Well I took pictures of our primary kids holding out their hands, then we made molded chocolate flower suckers for the kids to hold and they gave them to their moms. They turned out so cute that I ended up making big bouquets of the flower suckers for our mothers. They turned out really cute.

I then made this really cool MOM album. Have you seen the fun BoBunny word albums in the scrapbook section. I went to a digi scrapbook retreat and learned how to make those word albums digitally, so I made one for my mom and Dave's mom who hasn't received it yet). I think they turned out adorable.

On the back of the album was following poem. I thought I would share because it really sums up Mother's Day for me.

A Mother's love is something that no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away...
It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking...
It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems...
It is far beyond defining,it defies all explanation
A many splendour-ed miracle man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand.

Happy Birthday Braxton!!!

I can't believe I am the mother of a teenager. It seems like only yesterday he was the cute little toddler wanting to go outside and play basketball. I guess not everything has changed because he is still the boy who just wants to play basketball. Brax is such a good kid, and I love him so much.

Since he turned 13 I am going to list my 13 favorite things Braxton. It is going to be challenging to keep it to just thirteen, but I will try.

1. His hugs. I look forward to hugging and kissing my kids before bed each night. I have worried that Brax would out grow it, but every night he finds me, no matter the time, to give me a hug and a kiss, and say "I love you. Good night." Every mother should be so lucky to end their day this way.

2. He is always willing to help. YOu never have to ask twice with Braxton. Whatever you need, just ask, and he does it.

3. He is happy being him. This may be my favorite. Braxton has a great sense of self. He wears long black socks because he wants to (really he has a bunch of theoretical reason why, ask him sometime), and he loves his spiked hair. Doesn't matter if he is different. He is a bit of a maverik. He is just him.

4. He is a good big brother. The kids couldn't ask for better. He plays with all. Sometimes sport, sometimes video games, and even tea parties.

5. He has great passion. When Braxton loves something, he loves it with all his heart, and is willing to do whatever it takes.

6. His love for the game of basketball. He has loved the game since he could walk. I love seeing the light in his eyes as he improves and accomplishes his goals and dreams.

7. He is a good friend. Braxton is friends with all and accepts all. Never judging anyone.

8. He is a good example. I am so pleased to know that we can look at Brax and say he is setting a good example for friends and family. Such as accomplishment for a young man.

9. He never procrastinates. He certainly did not learn this from me. I need to take lessons from him. He NEVER puts things off. In fact he usually accomplishes things way ahead of time because he doesn't want to put it off.

10. He is responsible. I always know Braxton is on top of things. Whether it be his school work, making his bed, or cleaning his room, he is on top of it and it gets done.

11. He is thoughtful. Braxton is cautious, always considering the consequences of his actions.

12. He care about others. Never wanting anyone to feel bad, left out or alone.

13. Did I mention that I love this kid.

Dave was out of town on Braxton's actual birthday, so me and the kids celebrated that day with him, and we celebrate again the next day.

We have a fun tradition on Brax's birthday. He was born @ 7:11 p.m., so at 7:11 p.m. on his birthday we go to 7 11 (the gas station) and get slurpees. It is simple, but a lot of fun. Then Braxton picked out pizza and a movie for the night. It was special and fun because we don't usually do that on a school night.

The next day we celebrated with Dave. Braxton got to open his presents and pick dinner from wherever he wanted. He picked Crown Burger, yummy. He got some fun presents, but his favorite was his custom Utah Jazz jersey (an authentic Jazz jersey with his name and # on it).

We also did some celebrating with Grandma & Grandpa Peek and Grandma & Grandpa Geiselmayr.

Braxton's 13th birthday was a SUCCESS and tons of fun.

Fun Shot

In the Jr. Jazz program there is the “FunShot Competition”. Basically you have to shoot from specific spots on the court and make as many shots as you can in the allotted 60 seconds. Each spot is worth different points and you have to shoot from every spot twice to get the bonus. Yes it is confusing.

Braxton won the Fun Shot Competition in our area this year. The funny part about that is after he shot in that first round he was really frustrated with himself. “I just didn’t do very well. My shot was off.” Was what he said. He had quite a grin on his face when he got the phone call to say that he won, and he had a new determination. Dave and Brax practiced every morning for the two weeks leading up to the regional finals.

Well it paid off. Braxton won the regional competition up in Logan sending him to the finals which are held at Energy Solutions Arena.

We got to spend the day in Salt Lake watching Braxton shoot. It was a lot of fun for him to shoot from the same spots that Derron Williams, Paul Milsap and Kyle Korver do. He even got to sit in the teams seats. Braxton was a little bummed that he placed second, but the whole experience was tons of fun.

I think the whole family really enjoyed the experience. Braxton is such a lucky kid to have so much support and so many people who love and believe in him. Not only was our family there to support him, but Grandma & Grandpa Geiselmayr, Grandma & Grandpa Peek, and Adam & Jade. What a fun experience,

We got to finish up a fun day by attending the Jazz Game. Everyone had a great time.

Chloe's Braids

Chloe has some friends who have had the ‘braids’ in their hair before and has asked if she could have it done. I always told her that she just had too much hair. We break elastics daily around here (the big thick ones). Well, this time when she asked, I caved. I messaged my friend Becky for some instructions and tips (thanks a ton, Becky, I couldn’t have done it without you), and prepared myself.

During conference seemed like an ideal time to do it, so that was our plan. Spend the day watching conference, reading, and watching movies while braiding her hair. It was a great plan in theory. And we did just what we had planned. The only catch was that we thought it would take us about 6 hours , and it took a little longer. Six bags of hair, ninety-three braids and eleven hours later we were done. We started at 10:00 a.m. and finished at 12:30 a.m. (there were a few breaks in there). I thought after that long Chloe would never want it done again, but just a few short days later she was asking when we could do the braids for summer.

Truly I have loved the braids and so has Chloe. She loves being able to do her own hair (for the most part). I love how simple her hair is to do, and there are so many cute things you can do with the braids.

**Note to Self – Next time we do braids enlist help of others. Six hands would be better than just my two.

Justice's Jr Jazz Season

Back in March Justice’s Jr. Jazz season came to an end. It was 2 ½ months full of fun. Dave was able to coach Justice’s team again this year, which made Justice’s day. There were some really fun kids on their team, and the season was lots of fun.

Justice favorite memory of the season was when he made a steal and scored on the fast break. I think he felt like a SuPeRsTaR. Another highlight for Justice was beating the other South Weber team by 1 point.

It is a lot of fun to watch Justice play because he always gives 110%, no matter what. He may not be the fastest, or most skilled, but he is all heart. He is a ‘true lover’ of the game, as Dave puts it.

Unfortunately their team lost in the 1^st round of the play-offs and their season came to an end earlier than Justice would have liked, but it was a really fun season with lots of memories. Lots of hard work, lots of improvements, and lots of fun.

Happy Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day I wanted to post a few pictures. I know I have a ton of other things to post about, but didn’t want to forget this.

When I think about our beautiful planet, the first thing that comes to mind is Justice. Justice is a true nature lover, in every way. He loves to watch Discovery Channel and Animal planet. Anything that teaches him about our beautiful world is GREAT according to him. He was so excited for Disney’s “Planet Earth” to come to theaters. If you are a nature lover it is a must see.

I love nature as well (probably not as much as Justice, but…) When I thought about my favorite parts of nature a few things came to mind. Sunsets, rainbows , waterfalls, and the flowers of spring.

No matter what kind of day I have had when I look at a beautiful sunset it is hard to not feel some sort peace and awe. One night when we arrived at one Braxton’s basketball games my Dad noticed this beautiful and unique sunset. Conveniently I had my camera with me.

A rainbow is just pure beauty to me and symbolizes the beauty after the storm. Some rainbows are bright, and others are faded, but they all touch me in special way.

Every year when we go to Yellowstone I look forward to the waterfalls. They are truly magnificent. The power and beauty of the water is amazing.

And finally, there is nothing quite like the flowers in spring, especially after a long cold winter. The flowers just make me smile, even the dandelions that Belle brings me.

Easter with Geiselmayrs

The Saturday before Easter is usually spent at Grandma & Grandpa Geiselmayr’s house. The kids look forward to this every year.

It is a tradition now for us to dye Easter Eggs down there. When my kids were younger we would color them at home as well, but I can honestly say that I look forward to and love coloring the eggs down there. As expected, Chloe and Belle LOVE coloring the eggs. Justice does a few to be traditional and Braxton tried to avoid the whole thing. He did make his traditional orange egg with black lines resembling a basketball (somehow I didn’t get a picture of that).

After the egg coloring we had a delicious Easter lunch. Easter ham, potatoe salad, fruit, rolls, etc. YUM - YUM - YUM. We ate while we visted with family. It is always so nice to see Anita, Gage, Miranda, Ethan, and of course Ma G. and Pa G. We don't see Daves family that often, so we really enjoy the times we do.

Finally we did the annual Easter activities. We had an Easter egg hunt with a mix of plastic eggs and real hard boiled eggs. Belle would only collect the plastic eggs because she was afraid the real eggs would break. Then we had another egg hunt in teams which was a lot of fun. The boys did an egg toss. And we played pin the tail on the bunny. Everyone got in on the fun, even Dave.

Eggs Were 'Peek'ing

On Friday afternoon, we had a HUGE Easter Egg Hunt at my parent's (the Peeks). Adam & Jade & Grandpa hid all the eggs after Grandma and Braxton filled all of them. Each kid had to find 25 eggs. Wow, that was a lot. But it sure made for lots of fun. The eggs were hid high and low. They were in trees, under the fence, around teh pool, in bushes, they were everywhere.

All my kids are expert egg hunters now, so I can just sit back and watch. That said though, we did have to hunt for the last dozen or so. Actually we ended our hunt ONE egg short. Even the hiders couldn't remember where it was. I think Grandpa found it a few days later when mowing the lawn. I love to see the kids spot an egg and run to get it before anyone else can. I love to watch them count their eggs, and open them to see what is inside. I loved watching the big kids help the little kids find the last few egg.

Braxton was almost ready to graduate from the egg hunt (according to him), but he had a ton of fun. They hid some really tricky eggs just for him, and he was determined to find them before Justice did. And he was such a good kid helping Belle and Harlie find eggs.

Justice loves anything outside. He isn't nearly as competitive as Brax, so he goes at a little slower pace. He is more concerned that everyone is having fun and everyone is finding eggs (especially Belle & Harlie).

Chloe loves it all. You can see through the smile on her face the excitement she has. She ran from egg to egg and was the first one to find her 25. Then she focused on helping the little ones.

Belle is at that perfect age. She loves every holiday and thinks every little tradition is the funnest thing ever. She was giddy with excitement everytime she found an egg. She would giggle and run shouting, "I see an egg, " or "I see another one." It didn't matter whether it was the first egg found or the last, they each brought a huge grin.

We really lucked out and the weather was absolutely perfect. It was a PERFECT afternoon.

spring break

WARNING: Long post and lots of pictures ahead

The kids had an entire 9 days off for spring break this year, so we had tons of fun. I was hoping that we would go out of town, but it just didn’t seem to work out, but we had a super stay-cation right here.

My little sis and her kids came to visit, so that made things even more fun. We kicked off the week with FHE at Grandma & Grandpa Peek’s. We did our traditional Scripture Easter Story in Eggs and made Resurrection Rolls for our treat. (If you haven't done these give them a try they are really fun)

The kids always seem to love it, no matter how many times we do it. We followed FHE with Pizza and a movie. Simple, but fun.

Our next adventure was a trip to Chuck E. Cheese. We hadn’t been to the NEW Chuck E. Cheese in Layton yet, so it was kind of like a whole new thing.

After that we headed back to Grandma’s for our annual Spring Fling and sleepover.

I know people out there would argue this with me, but my kids have the best grandparents in the world. They always go out of their way to do such fun special things that make the kids feel so loved.

Every year my mom gives the kids a fun bag full of Spring Surprises. It usually has new clothes, games, candies, etc. This year was no different, and they kids were all so excited to look in their bags, even Brax who is getting old enough to think it isn’t cool. They all want to try on their new clothes and play with their stuff the instant they see it.

Don’t’ you love how Belle and Harlie had to wear everything that Grandma gave, even though it was a bit much.

We followed up that fun with movies and a sleepover. This is always a lot of fun.

Once again, giant hugs, kisses and thank yous MOM.

One night we decided it should be all about the big girls. Me, my Mom, Crystal and Jade. We had craft night. It was so much fun. We made a banner and some springtime blocks. Everyone had fun and everyone’s projects turned out so cute.

Our Spring Break also included some photo shoots and an Easter Egg Hunt, but I am going to post those separately.

I AM ALIVE

As you can tell by the date on this post, I meant to do it a few weeks ago when I had only been MIA for a couple of weeks. Where did the time go? I could list a bunch of excuses for my blog absence, but the reality is life has just been really busy. Between ball games, dance, school, Easter, spring break, deadlines etc. I just haven't had time to catch my breath. I don't know that things are less busy, but I think I am in a groove now. I love my blogging. It is therapeutic. So stay tuned

Friends Fur-ever

I haven't posted in a while about our puppy. He is full grown now, but definitely a puppy. I am pleased to report that he is fully potty trained and does most simple command, except for 'come' which is a pretty important one. We are working on that one.

** I do have to throw in here for a few of my bloggies, there have been many challenging times with him. There have been moments when I wanted to give him away. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. He is so much easier than he was even a month ago. Just hang in there girls. ***

He has truly become part of the family. The kids are really good about taking him for walks and playing with him, and I really enjoy just having him around. I do have to say though, Belle has the most fun with him. She plays and play and plays with him. Which brings me to the conversation and situation that bought about this post.

I was dusting my family room on Saturday and Belle was coloring a picture at the kitchen table when she said, "Mom I think Champ just wants to be by me. Is that OK?

"Sure that is fine honey," I said figuring the dog was standing by her chair.

Then I heard Belle say, "Thank you Champ that is the color I needed."

That perked my curiosity so I turned around to see. This is what I found.

Champ was sitting on the chair next to Belle with his front paws on the table. He was picking up markers in his mouth and handing them to Belle as she colored her picture. It was the cutest thing. I ran for my camera and of course didn't get the perfect shot, but I did get some cute ones.

So whenever I am feeling frustrated with our cute little dog, I am just going to remember that moment because it makes having him all worthwhile.

My Latest and Greatest

The end of winter when the cold is dragging on and I am aching for spring is always hard for me. I am constantly looking for projects to do. Things I can do to make 'in the house' more enjoyable until spring arrives. This year is no different, and I thought I share a few of my fun projects and some tips.

My first project is the frame and clock I made for my Dad for his birthday. He has a fly-tying desk in their basement and I thought these would be fun for him to have down there. The frame is just a basic unfinished wood frame that I painted the outside edges brown on, then I just measured it and created a digital scrapbook layout the right size, printed it out, then mod-podged it on, and voila. I think it turned out really cute. I hope my Dad liked it as mush as I did.

Next, I made him the clock. This is one of my new favorite projects. I bought a clock at Walmart (you could buy any size you want). I measured it and created a circle that size in photoshop. Once again I digi scrapped the canvas in photoshop and printed it out. Then I took the plastic face off the front of the clock (if you just wiggle it around, it comes right off), put the printed circle in and replaced the plastic.

The next project I made was this family tree. I needed a large 'something' to hang in my living room and I saw this tree at www.redenvelope.com, and thought it was really cool.

So I decided to make my own version which I made in photoshop and then printed at Sam's Club. I made it in two halves so it could be bigger and to get the two frame effect. I absolutely love how this turned out, and I love that it cost me under $20 compared to Red Envelope's $120.

This is my new 'Family Command Center'. I have been wanting to make one of these for a long time. I saw the idea here from Pottery Barn and then I saw a lady make her own version on KSL Studio 5.

The sky is the limit with this, but this is what I did. The black squares are peg board which I bought at Home Depot. Then I spray painted it black. The white square are dry erase boards. They are made from backing board (1/4" thick) and painted with dry erase paint (also bought at Home Depot). The red squares are corkboard covered with fabrice. I just bought 12x12 corkboard squares and glued them to a piece of backingboard (1/8" thick). Then I covered them with fabric (I used 2 different ones) using a staple gun. The frame is just made with molding spray painted black. The workers at home depot will cut everything for you. I had them cut all the squares 12x12. Finally the large white board to the left is just a magnet board from Roberts that I painted with the dry erase paint. I printed calendars on transparencies to hang on that.

I can't believe how much I saved making this. Mine was very inexpensive because I had most of the supplies, but if you were starting from scratch you could still do it for about $75 which definitely beats the Pottery Barn price of $280, and that doesn't include my dry-erase magnet board. I LOVE LOVE LOVE how this turned out.

My final project was my 'Utah Shelf' in my family room. This is another one of those projects that I have been going to do for a long time, but I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do. A few years ago the kids were all UTAH things for Halloween. I took some really cute pictures of them and had them printed 12x12, but then discovered that 12x12 frames are really expensive, so the pictures have just sat in my basement. After I finished my command center board, I had leftover backingboard and decided to paint the backing board black and mod-podge the 12x12 photos on it, hoping to give it the illusion of a canvas. I couldn't have hoped for a better ending product. They really look like canvases and they only cost me about $0.50 a piece. The large picture hanging on the wall is a canvas that I painted black and mod-podged the picture on.

Well those are my latest. I have a few more projects in the works for birthday, mother's day father's day, and end of school stuff. I feel a little silly sharing my projects, but oh well, it's my blog.

St. Patty's Day

we had a wonderful St. Patty's Day this year. Nothing too fancy, but lots of luck and lots of fun. It was an early beginning to the day because Braxton had basketball practice @ 7:00 a.m. We started out with "LUCKY CHARMS" for breakfast.

Everyone even showed up at the breakfast table with green on (even Dave).

The kids headed off to school where they all had some St. Patty's Day fun. Belle probably had the most fun at preschool where they made Clover Hats and Leprachauns. They also followed the rainbow and found a pot of gold (candy) at the end. She was really into the holiday this year. After preschool she said, "I like those little green guys (leprechauns) Mom. I think they should come and play with me more. Do you have their phone number?"

I love how she never really saw a leprechaun, but she wants me to invite them over for a play date.

After school and dance lessons we headed to Braxton's basketball game. Their team certainly had the Luck Of The Irish with them. They won 80-5. NO that isn't a typo, really 80-5. It was actually a little sad, but kind of fun.

We finished up the day with "Green Breakfast for Dinner" and our traditional TIC-TAC TOE tournament. It was really yummy and a lot of fun.

Anyway, I really do feel like a lucky gal. Lucky to have all that I have, especially my husband and kids and family. Hope everyone had a Happy St. Patrick's Day.
